Symetra and the Seattle Seahawks have honored Auburn Mountainview High School’s Tim Scott and Lakeland Hills Elementary ‘s Melissa Sergis as Symetra Heroes in the Classroom in October.

Scott teaches engineering, robotics and woodshop. Sergis teaches first grade.

“Tim Scott believes in his students and connects with them on a personal level,” said Becky Clowers, a parent who nominated Scott. “He has a hands-on approach of teaching, demonstrating his skills to students rather than just lecturing.”

“Mr. Scott also mentors the robotics team, where he challenges students to go outside their comfort zones and try things they can’t imagine doing. He has taken what began as a small group and grown it into one of the biggest clubs on campus,” Clowers said. “Mr. Scott leads, inspires and works alongside the team, volunteering countless hours each year. He pushes the students to think big and continually improve as they grow together as a team. Auburn Mountainview High School Robotics would not have advanced to the world championship for the past four years without Tim Scott’s guidance and vision.”

Brandon Huffman, a parent, nominated Sergis.

“Ms. Sergis will always be a ‘hero’ to the Huffman family. She worked tirelessly and lovingly to make sure that first grade was the special experience it should be for our daughter, Avery, who was fighting terminal brain cancer,” Huffman said. “Whether it was making sure that Avery was physically and socially comfortable in the classroom after losing her mobility, or spending countless hours in our home teaching her when she was too ill to attend class, Ms. Sergis was there for Avery – and for us – every day.”

Scott and Sergis are among 16 teachers from the Puget Sound area who will be honored for educational excellence in the Symetra Heroes in the Classroom program during the 2016 NFL season. They received $1,000 for classroom books and supplies. They also received tickets to Monday night’s Seahawks game and were acknowledged during an on-field presentation at CenturyLink Field.

Symetra winners are selected based on their ability to make a real difference in students’ lives, to go above and beyond in their day-to-day responsibilities and to help students build life skills.
