Every so often an opportunity presents itself in the right place, at the right time, for the right reason. As citizens of Auburn we have that opportunity in our chance to vote for our first woman mayor. It’s about time.
After a long list of men managing the city’s business, we are ready for the leadership of a strong, capable, compassionate woman.
However, choosing a candidate purely for their gender is not something we would do. We are voting for Nancy Backus, not because she’s a woman, but because she’s a candidate with the appropriate background, training and experience. Nancy has demonstrated leadership skills, the ability to think critically and an understanding of what “encouraging the heart” means in business, in government, and in life – that you listen thoughtfully, expect the best, recognize contributions and treat people with respect. Nancy lives this philosophy and will bring it with her to the office of mayor.
Remember that the City is a municipal corporation. An applicant for the CEO position, which is what the mayor’s job is, should have a resume that would hold up with an application to any corporation of comparable size and budget, i.e. education, experience, skills, and references.
Auburn is at a crossroads, at the beginning of a significant building expansion that will require competent, dedicated leadership and oversight. We, the voters, are the hiring committee.
Think about this as you analyze the qualifications of the candidates for this office. Nancy Backus has the resume and the qualifications and is the best choice for our next mayor.
