The Auburn School District placed a Chinook Elementary School librarian on administrative leave after she was charged with second-degree rape of a child stemming from an alleged incident with a 13-year-old boy.

On June 10, the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office charged former Chinook Elementary School librarian Shayla Schwoch, 37, with second-degree rape of a child. According to charging documents, Schwoch went to the Auburn Police Department on June 5 to report a sexual assault. Documents stated that she then told officers about a sexual assault she committed against a 13-year-old boy at her home that spanned between two days.

According to documents, throughout her interview with police, it was clear that Schwoch believed she was the victim of the incidents. The boy was then interviewed, and he recounted a similar sequence of events, but he included details Schwoch had omitted, indicating she had initiated sexual acts with him.

“Shayla is 37 years old and had the full capability and responsibility to stop any sexual encounter from occurring but took no substantial step to stop the above-described criminal encounters,” the probable cause documents stated.

According to Auburn School District spokesperson Vicki Alonzo, on June 6, the district placed Schwoch on administrative leave pending the investigation, but the district does not have any concerns that she was unsafe with any students. According to a memo sent to Chinook Elementary School families, the incident did not involve a student from the school.

“This news is upsetting and we are here to support students and families. If your child has questions or needs support, our school counselors and support staff are available to help,” Chinook Elementary Principal Michelle Drake said in the memo. “As always, we remain committed to the safety and well-being of our students and school community. If you have questions or need additional support, please contact me.”

According to the Department of Adult and Juvenile Detention jail lookup portal, Schwoch was booked into the King County Correctional Facility at 4:05 p.m. June 5 and had bail set at $100,000. According to the portal, she was then released at 5:49 p.m. June 6.

Details of the incident

On June 5, Schwoch arrived at the Auburn Police Department to report a sexual assault. Documents stated that when Schwoch arrived home, a 13-year-old boy who lived at her residence had found a package containing sexual products.

Schwoch went on to say that the 13-year-old boy began saying sexual things to her, and she told him to leave and stop. Documents also stated that she then said she was hugging the 13-year-old boy, and she licked his ear.

According to documents, Schwoch said that she tried to reason with the boy, saying they couldn’t do anything, and she kept trying to get the boy to leave her alone. Schwoch said that she then performed sexual acts with the boy to try and get him to stop.

According to documents, Schwoch said they slept in the same bed that night, and then the next morning, the boy hinted that he wanted to have sexual intercourse with her, but she declined. Schwoch said that she told the boy that she thought he would tell his friends, and then they performed a different sexual act.

According to documents, the boy was then interviewed and corroborated that Schwoch had licked his ear, but that she is the one who initiated contact. The boy said that Schwoch made a remark to him, stating that he is attractive.

The boy then said that Schwoch initiated more sexual contact with him that night, and then they slept in the same bed together, according to documents. The boy said Schwoch then initiated more sexual contact with him the next morning.
