COVID testing sites to re-open in Auburn, Federal Way

The testing sites will be operated by community partners rather than the county.

COVID-19 testing sites in Federal Way and Auburn are poised to re-open after Public Health Seattle & King County (PHSKC) relinquishes control this June.

Earlier in May, PHSKC announced it would cease its operation of testing sites in various King County cities including Auburn, Federal Way and Tukwila. Instead of letting the sites shut down entirely, various community partners have stepped in to take over the operation of the sites, according to PHSKC.

Biomedical company Altius is taking over the Federal Way site which will re-open in June. The Auburn site will also re-open this June and operated by University of Washington Medicine.

“We are so grateful to our community partners for their support over the past two years and for stepping in to take over the management of these sites,” said Francisco Arias-Reyes, PHSKC Regional Health administrator. “These organizations have played a critical role in ongoing and continued efforts to provide free testing to communities in south King County.”

All sites will continue to provide free testing regardless of immigration or insurance status, according to public health.

The COVID-19 testing site is at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center (650 SW Campus Dr.). An official date has not yet been announced, but is planned for early June.

Tukwila testing site

The Tukwila testing site will be closed May 28 to June 2 to allow King County to transition full site operation to the Altius Institute for Biomedical Sciences. The Seattle-based company has been working in partnership with King County at the Tukwila site since it opened in 2020. The Tukwila testing site is reopening Friday, June 3.
