Students at Evergreen Heights Elementary School discovered what it might be like to have limitations, during Disability Awareness Day on March 14.

Boys and girls by grade levels visited the gym and went to different stations, participating in experiences that simulate someone with a disability.

“Students were able to show empathy as well as surprise by how disabilities impact lives. They also were able to see that having a disability does not limit what one can do,” said Elicia Kneadler, a certified special education teacher, whose Structured Learning Center (SLC) class hosted the event. “They were able to see having a disability may require more support, more time. And while it may be more difficult to perform tasks, it is still possible.”

Kneadler’s class made a poster, “Don’t Dis My Ability … See What I Can Do,” which displayed photos of the many things students perform in the SLC program at Evergreen Heights.

Students shared their experiences with others, and at the end of the day each of them contributed to a school-wide bulletin board, expressing what they can do to show kindness toward someone with a disability.
