Fire blotter: 2 cars collide in middle turn lane

Between Aug. 1 and Aug. 7, the Valley Regional Fire Authority responded to 327 calls for service, among them the following.

Aug. 1

Service call: 3:45 p.m. (Auburn). Valley Com dispatched firefighters to a water leak between the upper and lower floors of an apartment complex, where the toilet wall stem in an upstairs unit was leaking. Firefighters helped the resident by securing the water valve, and then began salvage operations for removing the water. Firefighters contacted the building maintenance manager for further assistance to the residents.

Aug. 2

Collision: 8:57 p.m. (Lakeland Hills). While firefighters were responding to an unknown aid call, Valley Com upgraded the call to an injury accident and then quickly to an advanced life support injury accident requiring paramedics. What happened was that an adult motorcycle rider had suffered serious injuries requiring rapid interventions, such as splinting the pelvis and controlling bleeding. The person was further treated on scene before King County Paramedics zipped him or her to an airfield in Auburn to rendezvous with Airlift Northwest, which ultimately winged the person to Harborview Medical Center.

Aug. 3

Accident: 12:30 p.m. (Auburn). Firefighters responding to a 2-car, head-on collision arrived on scene to find that two cars had collided in a middle turn lane, and the occupants of both vehicles were complaining of injuries. A VRFA aid car transported one senior citizen in the first vehicle to a local hospital, and a private ambulance did the same for a senior citizen in the second vehicle.

Aug. 4

Brush fire: 5:56 p.m. (Auburn). Firefighters from two stations responded to a brush fire near a homeless encampment next to the Green River, and at about 9:15 p.m., their combined efforts gained control of the fire.

Aug. 5

Brush fire: 3:23 p.m. (Auburn). Firefighters hustling to reports of bushes ablaze near a gas station arrived to discover that a bystander with a fire extinguisher had already drowned the fire, so firefighters used hand tools and water from a fire engine to complete the job.

Aug. 6

Collision: 11:45 a.m. (Auburn). Firefighters and King County Paramedics responding to a truck-motorcycle collision treated the motorcyclist for multiple injuries on scene, and King County Medic One transported the injured party to Harborview Medical Center for additional care.

Aug. 7

Aid call: 10:21 a.m. (Algona). Firefighters treated a senior citizen who had dislocated her femur, and a private ambulance transported her to to MultiCare Auburn Medical Center.
