Fire blotter: Responding to “shack” fire

Between Feb. 6 and Feb. 12, the Valley Regional Fire Authority responded to 317 calls for service, among them the following.

Feb. 6

Kitchen fire: 10 a.m. (Auburn). Firefighters responding to a reported kitchen fire in an apartment arrived to find that the small fire had already been extinguished, but they stuck around to help the homeowner air out the apartment. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Feb. 7

Aid call: 12:50 p.m. (Pacific). Firefighters responded to a senior citizen who was short of breath. They learned that the man had recently sustained pulmonary embolism and that his prior difficulty with breathing had returned. Firefighters evaluated the man and treated him at the scene before a private ambulance motored him to MultiCare Auburn Medical Center.

Feb. 8

Detached garage fire: 8:30 a.m. (Algona). While VRFA firefighters were on their way to a “shack” fire, they learned that the fire had been upgraded to a residential fire. When firefighters arrived, they found heavy fire in a detached garage in which people were reportedly living. Because of the heavy fire involvement and a confirmation that the building was no longer occupied, firefighters maintained a defensive posture and did not enter the building. Crews extinguished the fire, and no injuries were reported. The fire investigator tracked the fire to a propane heater that had been accidentally left on.

Feb. 9

Accident: 6:28 p.m. (Auburn). Firefighters responded to a two-vehicle collision on Auburn Way South where they found two injured people, whom they treated before TriMed transported them to MAMC’s emergency room.

Feb. 10

Accident: 2:45 p.m. (Auburn). Firefighters responded to an accident involving a single vehicle into a barrier. Firefighters and King County Medics treated the injured person on the scene, and firefighters transported that person to MAMC.

Feb. 11

Apartment fire: 2:30 p.m. (Auburn) Firefighters responded to a north Auburn apartment fire that had already spread to multiple units by the time personnel got there. Crews quickly applied water to the fire and prevented the fire from extending past three apartment units. Multiple families were displaced, but fortunately no one was hurt. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Feb. 12

Accident: 12:40 p.m. (Lea Hill). Firefighters responded to a roll-over vehicle accident near westbound Highway 18 and Auburn Way South. They found one vehicle on its side in the middle of Highway 18. Safety devices had prevented the driver from sustaining any injuries.
