OCT. 20

Natural gas leak: 1:30 p.m., Auburn. Engine 38 responded to Sam’s Club at the Supermall after hearing about a natural gas leak where they found a roasting oven on the fritz, displaying a gas leak alarm. Finding no detectable leak, personnel shut off the gas and called in a maintenance technician. Otherwise, it was a normal business day at Sam’s.

Residential fire: 11:13 a.m.,

Auburn. Responding to a structure fire in the 1700 block of 49th Street Northeast, VRFA and Kent fire units found a small, exterior wall fire on the south side of a house. Personnel opened the exterior with a chain saw and snuffed out the fire. When they confirmed that the house was empty, they used a fan to air it out. The cause is under investigation.

OCT. 22

Car accident: 9 a.m., Auburn. VRFA firefighters and King Country Medic 1 responded to a pickup truck versus motorcycle collision at 277th and Auburn Way North. The motorcyclist had been thrown from his bike and suffered serious, but non-life threatening injuries. Firefighters and paramedics treated the man at the scene and transported him to a hospital.

Car vs. pedestrian fatality:

1 p.m., Auburn. VRFA units were dispatched to a car vs. pedestrian collision in the 2400 block of Auburn Way South. Engine and Aid 32 arrived to find an off-duty firefighter paramedic performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation on a 73-year-old woman who had been struck by a vehicle while crossing the roadway. Police estimate that the vehicle was traveling approximately 30 to 40 mph at impact. Firefighters quickly determined that the pedestrian was deceased at the scene.

Service aid: 5:27 p.m., Auburn. Engine 31 responded to the 600 block of 47th Street Southeast to help a man with a broken wheel chair. The right, front wheel tread of the electric-powered wheel chair had come off the wheel hub, rendering the chair inoperable. VRFA firefighters pushed the chair and the man a short distance to his home where he was able to change chairs.

Car fire: 11:58 a.m., Auburn. VRFA units responded to a reported car fire next to a structure in the 700 block of 47th Street Southeast. Engine 38 arrived first to find the car fire, while significant, did not threaten any nearby buildings. Personnel extinguished the fire. Nobody was hurt.
