Firefighters sniff out source of mysterious natural gas smell | Fire blotter

Between April 12 and April 18, the Valley Regional Fire Authority responded to 258 calls for service, among them the following:

April 12

Kitty: 1:20 p.m. (Auburn). Firefighters treated a woman for feline-inflicted puncture wounds and a small cut, and a private vehicle transported her to MultiCare Covington Medical Center.

April 13

Arson investigation: 10:39 p.m. (Auburn). Firefighters were dispatched to a residential roof fire where they found that a neighbor had already extinguished the fire with a garden hose. Another homeowner provided to Auburn police a private surveillance video showing an act of arson and an associated vehicle. Investigators collected additional evidence at the scene for an ongoing investigation by VRFA investigators and Auburn police.

April 14

Natural gas: 11:49 a.m. (Lakeland). Firefighters responded to reports of natural gas inside a home and nosed out the real culprit, which was new mulch and soil in the garage.

April 15

Grass fire: 7:33 p.m. (Lea Hill). Firefighters responded to a report of a grass fire in a vacant lot and found a small, 20-square-foot grass fire, which they quickly extinguished.

April 16

Aid call: 11:38 a.m. (Auburn). Firefighters responded to an elderly woman who was thought to be in cardiac arrest, and they discovered that bystanders had already begun CPR. After a minute, CPR was stopped when the woman began to breathe on her own. Firefighters and King County Medic One treated the woman, and an ambulance transported her to MultiCare Auburn Medical Center (MAMC).

Accident: 3:06 a.m. (Pacific). Firefighters helped a woman who was complaining of neck and head pain after a motor vehicle accident, and a private ambulance transported her to MAMC.

April 18

Accident: 12:22 p.m. (Auburn). Firefighters responded to a 2-car accident with one seriously injured person, secured the scene and stabilized the person, whom King County Medic One Paramedics evaluated and transported to Harborview Medical Center.

Brush fire: 4:34 p.m. (Auburn). Firefighters responded as mutual aid on Green Valley Road for a brush fire. The fire grew in size and a 2nd and 3rd alarm were called. Multiple fire agencies from the South Puget Sound area, including the Department of Natural Resources, were used to gain control of the fire.
