With the Legislature’s approval of Senate Bill 5116, Gov. Jay Inslee’s plan for Washington to commit to 100 percent clean electricity by 2045, state Sen. Phil Fortunato, R-Auburn, has sent a letter requesting a gubernatorial veto.

The cornerstone legislation of the governor’s green agenda in the 2019 legislative session would have damaging effects to the state’s economy, argues Fortunato.

“I know it seems like an odd request, but I think it would be the right thing to do for Washington,” Fortunato said. “Our state’s economy is booming and policies like this one, in conjunction with the litany of new taxes and regulations coming from the majority, will grind our economy to halt. The governor needs to veto this bad policy that will make energy in our state too expensive for families and drive up costs of everything related to energy use.”
