Heavy overnight rain produced mudslides Thursday morning, blocking East Jovita Boulevard, a popular shortcut for commuters along the King and Pierce county border.

A mudslide along the boulevard, near the West Valley Highway and State Route 167 intersection between Pacific and Edgewood, blocked the roadway and swept away a minivan.

Both lanes were closed and mud and trees were covering the roadway. Officials hope to have the road re-opened by the evening commute.

KIRO-TV reported a man and woman were inside a green minivan on their way to work when they hit the mud. The couple told police they tried to drive over the slide and became stuck. They were not hurt. The van sits atop about a foot of mud.
