Rebecca Nelson, a junior at Auburn High School, has been selected to represent the state of Washington as a “senator” for the 62nd American Legion Auxiliary Girls Nation program on July 19-26 in Washington, D.C.

Nelson was selected while attending the legion’s state program. The program provides high school juniors the opportunity to participate in hands-on citizenship training.

Participants learn government by actually creating a mythical state through the election of public officials on local, county and state levels, and then by carrying out the duties of these respective offices.

A continuation of Girls State is Girls Nation where two “senators” from each state are selected to participate in a simulated national government program in Washington, D.C. The Girls Nation “senators” are divided into two political “parties.” The parties do not reflect the two major political parties in today’s system, but allow participants to gain a special knowledge of how the system works.
