His latest produce is an award-winning marrow, weighing a whopping 48 pounds, a state record, according to the Pacific Northwest Giant Pumpkin Growers.

The marrow officially was weighed at Scholz Farm in Orting.

The hefty gourd broke the previous mark of 69 pounds held by grower Erin Huff of Aberdeen.

The world record remains at 143 pounds, Halbert said.

“I did it for fun,” said Halbert, owner of Proper British Bacon and Meats of Auburn and one of the state’s top pumpkin growing competitors. “I didn’t know it would get out of hand.”

Halbert planted the vegetable in June at his Enumclaw farm.

“It’s awesome,” Halbert said, “and they are easy to grow. They take a lot less area to grow.”

The grower plans to give away the marrow’s seeds in November at his Auburn shop.

Halbert also finished third at the Puyallup Fair with his 850.5-pound pumpkin.
