What happened in the Auburn School District board room Thursday officially was “a retirement party,” a term usually associated with long, slow decline. And with so many colleagues and friends milling about swapping stories, it certainly looked like such an event. But when Linda Cowan is the retiree, the term “retirement” needs amplification – for the district’s high-energy superintendent would be the last person to take that storied rocking chair and gather dust.

The Auburn Optimist Club’s scholarship foundation awarded $500 scholarships each to five high school students. They recipients are Joe Wiley, of West Auburn High; Whitney Cullum, Mountainview; Kealsye Fahey, of Auburn Riverside; Veronica Pratt, of Auburn High; and hearing/sight impaired Lucas Garrison, of Auburn Riverside.
A new pilot recycling program has been put in motion at Auburn Mountainview High, under the direction of horticulture instructor Regina Grubb. Clint Westmoreland from Cedar Grove Composting and Kathleen Edman from the City of Auburn are joining the effort. Student volunteers will create four recycling stations in the commons to recycle the paper trays from the lunchroom and to recycle a portion of organic waste.
Auburn Parks, Arts & Recreation is gearing up for its annual KidsDay event, to be held at Game Farm Park on June 20. The event, held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., will feature nine inflatable rides, children’s activities, live stage entertainment, mini golf, kids’ arts and craft booths, food concessions, more than 55 information/activity vendors and more.
