A man was shot to death in front of his son early Tuesday morning after a dispute in the parking lot of the Auburn Top Foods store at 1702 Auburn Way N.

Police took the suspect, a 28-year-old Kent man, into custody at the Kentbrook Apartments on South 248th Street at 9:40 a.m. Tuesday.

The gunman had fled on foot, and police initially used a K-9 unit to search the area around the store.

“He was taken into custody without incident and was exiting the house when SWAT officers were taking position and about to attempt contact,” said Auburn Police Sgt. David Colglazier.

Police had not yet found the weapon as of Wednesday but served a warrant on the residence. The man was alone at the time of his arrest.

The man’s 20-year-old son saw the shooting and described the suspect to Auburn police. Officers and paramedics performed CPR on the father, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The King County Medical Examiner completed an autopsy Wednesday morning but as of Wednesday afternoon had not yet released the victim’s name.

Detectives are still trying to piece together the events that led to the fatal shooting.

“Our focus has been on finding him, now our job is to put together what happened and why,” Colglazier said.

The suspect, who as of Wednesday afternoon had not been charged with the crime, is still in custody at the Auburn jail.

“We will hold him here as long as we’re talking. We will move him to Kent for his first court appearance,” Colglazier said.
