Registration open for food academy

Auburn School District invites children entering the fourth and fifth grades to register for the Kids Summer Food Academy, a program designed to teach students about the environment, healthy eating, gardening and more.

Auburn School District invites children entering the fourth and fifth grades to register for the Kids Summer Food Academy, a program designed to teach students about the environment, healthy eating, gardening and more.

Seven four-day camps will meet Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

The program runs July 7-10, July 14-17, July 21-24, July 28-31, Aug. 4-7, Aug. 11-14, Aug. 18-21.

The cost per session is $35. Each session is centered in the garden and includes a different food and learning focus. The registration fee is waived for any family that qualifies for free or reduced priced meals.

Students will meet at the Washington Elementary School kitchen and prepare from scratch and serve a wholesome breakfast, followed by hands-on learning activities in the outdoor garden adjacent to the school.

Each day will end with the students returning to the kitchen to prepare lunch from scratch with fresh foods from the garden.

The Kids Summer Food Academy is a partnership between the school district child nutrition services staff and the Washington State University King County Extension Food$ense educators.
