Ebbe D. R. Mejlaender

Ebbe D. R. Mejlaender, 76, of Auburn, WA, passed away October 9, 2008, after a determined battle with Alzheimer’s the last few years. He was born November 9, 1931, to parents Ebbe Dag Romar Mejlaender and Sonja Svanhild Halvorsen in Oslo, Norway. In 1951, Ebbe Jr. came to the United States and joined the U.S. Air Force, where he served in Germany until 1955 and the Reserves until 1959. He became a U.S. citizen in 1954. Ebbe married Roberta Westmoreland of Everett, WA (whom he met while they were each in Germany) in 1956 and they had four children together between 1957 and 1966. Upon completing his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Washington in 1958, Ebbe began a fulfilling career in project management and financial systems development with The Boeing Company in Renton until his retirement in 1987. Lifelong hobbies included gardening, carpentry and home-repair, downhill and cross country skiing, tennis, European travel, and numerous road trips within the Northwest region and throughout the United States.Ebbe is survived by his four children: Greg Mejlaender and grand-daughter Kelsey of Newcastle, John Mejlaender and daughter-in-law Sarah of Bellevue, Ivar Mejlaender and grandsons Sten and Bjorn of La Conner, and Sonja Mejlaender of Renton. He is also survived by long time companion Luella Scyler of Auburn. In Oslo, Norway, Ebbe is survived by his sister, Sonja Horgen and her five children – Wenche, Monica, Vibeke, Iselin, and Emil, and several grandnieces and nephews. A private family service will be held at Tahoma National Cemetery.Honoring Ebbe’s advocacy for the importance of education, and with all four children having graduated from Renton High School, memorial contributions may be made to Renton High School Excellence in Education, a non-profit established by RHS Alumni to support educational programs and activities for students.
