Janis “Kay” Smith-Hurt | Obituary

In loving memory of Janis “Kay” Smith-Hurt, beloved spouse, sister, auntie and friend. Kay was a very kind, friendly woman with a sense of humor. She is survived by her sister Valerie Emmerson, her brother Roger (Connie) Smith, her niece Kimberly (James) Shumaker and their children Oliver and Amelia, and her husband Tom Smith-Hurt, to whom she was married twenty nine and a half years.

Kay loved going to church and loved her church family. She loved fellowship and church potlucks and reading the Bible and spiritual Christian books, especially books by Ellen G. White. Kay enjoyed picnics and walks with her husband at Flaming Geyser State Park in Auburn, Washington as well as trips to Big Timber, Montana to see her sister and parents, and trips to San Francisco, California to see her husband’s family. Two of her favorite vacation destinations in Washington state were Ocean Shores and Port Townsend.

Kay is the daughter of Clyde Wesley Smith and Winifred Elma Wheatley. She was born in Portland, Oregon on July 7th, 1947. She lived most of her life in Washington state, and a good portion in Montana, as well as Oregon. She attended college at Montana State and Walla Walla university in College Place, Washington, and received a degree as an x-ray technician. Later in life, she attended Renton Vocational Technical College, and received a degree in childcare.

Kay passed peacefully on June 5th, 2023 at the age of 75, at 5:18 in the morning in an adult family home in Auburn, Washington, three miles from her home of about 45 years. Kay will be missed very much by her husband, family and friends. A memorial/celebration of life will be held on Sunday, July 23rd, 2023, at Auburn City Seventh Day Adventist Church, 402 29th Street SE, Auburn, WA 98002, between 2:00pm and 5:00pm.
