The Auburn Riverside girls volleyball team advanced at the state 3A volleyball tournament Friday at Saint Martin’s University and Timberline High School in Lacey.

In their first-round match, the No. 1 Ravens (34-0) swept aside Seattle Prep. Game scores were 25-13, 25-17 and 25-11.

Senior setter Carson Heilborn led the way for Auburn Riverside with 38 assists and eight kills. Senior Precious Atafua chipped in with nine kills.

In the second round, the Ravens battled past defending 3A champion and No. 6 Mercer Island, 3-1. Game scores were 25-27, 27-25, 25-14, 25-17.

The win sets up a showdown between the Ravens and Columbia River, the No 2 ranked 3A team in the state, at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Saint Martins. A win earns Auburn Riverside a berth in the championship match against the winner of the Capital (29-3) vs. Lakeside match.

The championship match is at 8:15 p.m. Saturday at Saint Martin’s University.

Columbia River posted a 3-1 win against Holy Names (25-19, 25-13, 23-25, 25-8) and a 3-2 victory over Kamiakin (25-22, 22-25, 25-21, 18-25, 18-16).

The Ravens and Chieftains last met a week ago, when Auburn Riverside rallied from a 2-0 deficit to earn a 3-2 win (23-25, 24-26, 25-9, 26-24, 15-8) and the district title.

Auburn Riverside coach Christine Leverenz is confident in her team’s chances.

“It’s all chemistry, and the fact that I have a pretty phenomenal setter (Heilborn). That helps a lot, because she delivers the ball pretty equally,” Leverenz said. “These guys get along pretty well and they support each other.”
