Auburn’s Komar earns spot with NFL’s Arizona Cardinals

It’s the culmination of a lifelong dream for Max Komar.

It’s the culmination of a lifelong dream for Max Komar.

Last Friday, the University of Idaho and Auburn Riverside High School graduate was informed by the Arizona Cardinals of the National Football League that he was among the 53 players chosen for the team’s active roster, meaning he will suit up for the team’s season opener against St. Louis on Sunday.

“It’s a crazy experience,” said Komar, a 5-foot-11, 202-pound wide receiver.

Komar, who lead the Cardinals in the preseason with 12 receptions for 200 yards and a touchdown, found out he had made the final cut during the team’s regularly scheduled weight and conditioning session last Friday.

“We were supposed to have a team meeting at 1 p.m.,” Komar said. “And as people were lifting and running, other people were coming up and getting the people who were waived to take into Coach (Ken) Whisenhunt’s office so he could tell them. Eventually, they never came up to me. I went to the team meeting and they told us who had made the 53-man roster.”

Komar immediately shared the news via a Twitter message: “So happy right now! Officially made the active 53 man roster! Blessed!”

Komar and the Cardinals will travel to St. Louis for a NFC West matchup with the Rams at 1:15 p.m. Sunday.

“Oh man, honestly, it’s a dream come true,” Komar said. “Everything I’ve worked for and dreamed about since I was a kid has come true.”

The Cardinals will travel to Seattle on Oct. 24 for a game against the Seahawks, Komar’s favorite team until he became a Cardinal.

“It feels great. It’s going to be a lot of fun going up and playing at Qwest with all my family and friends against a team that I grew up following and loving,” he said.

“A team I no longer like,” he said, chuckling. “It’s great being able to play in the same division as them.”
