Auburn’s Rebecca Thareek is not loquacious.
But with her drawing attention for her success on the track, the sophomore does not need to be.
That continued during Saturday’s Bellevue Invitational, where she won the high jump with a personal-best mark of 5 feet, 6 inches, and also placed in a pair of hurdles events. She was third in the 100 meters in 15.41 seconds, which was won by Jackson’s Michal Jones (15.08), and fourth in the 300 in 46.78. Jones won that event, as well, in 44.82.
“I just had confidence,” Thareek said when asked about her success in the high jump. “It made a huge difference.”
Auburn girls coach Doug Burt said that is part of the reason behind his pupil’s success.
“She seems very low-key, but she wants to do well,” he said. “She’s surprisingly competitive.”
But Burt said Thareek’s success extends beyond that.
“She’s definitely the hardest worker on our team,” he said. “She does everything with a smile.”
Thareek, who placed third in the high jump (5-4) and fourth in the 300 hurdles (45.18) at last year’s state meet, said her goal is to improve upon those marks.
“That’s all I can ask for,” said Thareek, who also plays for the Trojans’ volleyball and basketball teams.
Is a state title in the high jump within reach?
“Anything’s possible with her,” Burt said. “She’s a fantastic kid.”
Thareek’s performance was the highlight for the two Auburn School District programs that participated at the Bellevue Invitational as she was the only individual to place in the top eight. Auburn’s girls team finished in a tie with The Northwest School and Newport for 16th place with 21 points. Auburn Riverside did not score any points at the meet, which Kentwood won with 55.
On the boys side, the Ravens were 23rd with 10 points, while the Trojans finished tied for 36th with Cascade with one. Jackson won the team championship with 76.5 points.
