Noteworthy names of ’08 Auburn preps

A quick look at the best of the best in 2008 Auburn high school sports.

KIRSTEN FAUSKO

AUBURN MOUNTAINVIEW

A versatile senior, Fausko played big roles for the Lions on the soccer field and on the basketball court, earning All-SPSL 3A first-team honors in both sports.

RACHEL GIVENS

AUBURN RIVERSIDE

Goalkeeping is the forte of this Ravens senior, and she was the SPSL 3A Most Valuable Player last fall. During the winter, she often was the first player off the bench as the Ravens went all the way to their second straight state girls basketball title.

SHAWNA JORDAN

AUBURN

The Trojan sophomore won the Class 3A state 1-meter diving championship last fall, sealing the deal with a 2 1/2-twisting back somersault on her final dive, and finishing with 420.95 points.

HANNAH KIYOHARA

JEFFERSON

The Raiders sophomore was an All-SPSL North Division first-team infielder in softball, and was a second-team All-SPSL North selection in basketball.

DOMINIKA KRISTINIKOVA

AUBURN RIVERSIDE

A foreign exchange student from Slovakia, Kristinikova, a setter, earned SPSL 3A Most Valuable Player honors and helped the Ravens reach the Class 3A state championship match.

SOFIA MALAMURA

JEFFERSON

A senior, Malamura won the state shot put title at 41 feet, 2 1/4 inches. She also was a second-team All-SPSL North selection for basketball.

ALEXI MORTON

AUBURN MOUNTAINVIEW

Just a sophomore, Morton excelled in three sports. She was an All-SPSL 3A honorable mention middle hitter in volleyball, won the all-around silver medal and a bronze on the vault in gymnastics last winter, then qualified for the Star Track state meet in the 100 meters, coming within one spot of finals.

AUBURN

The sophomore, who was a second-team All-SPSL 3A defender in soccer last fall, ran to the Class 3A title in the 1,600 meters this spring, posting a personal-best time of 5 minutes, 4.17 seconds.

MERCEDES WETMORE

AUBURN RIVERSIDE

A steady sophomore guard, Wetmore earned All-SPSL 3A girls basketball honors in the winter. In the spring, she came out for softball for the first time, and became a second-team all-league infielder.

KENTWOOD

The multi-talented Conqueror junior made big impacts in both volleyball and basketball. She helped Kentwood to a third-place finish in the Class 4A state volleyball tournament last fall, earning SPSL North Division MVP honors as the Conquerors posted their third straight undefeated record in league play. She followed up with a first-team all-league basketball season, averaging 10.5 points and 4.48 rebounds to help Kentwood return to state.
