Trojan soccer cold start continues in loss to Decatur

Avendano and Rush get the two goals for Auburn

The start of the Auburn High School girls soccer season hasn’t been an easy one, and the Decatur Gators didn’t help either. There was some hope that the game Sept. 19 could be the difference as Auburn beat Decatur last year, 6-2.

Both sides entered without a win in their 2023 season, and the Trojans quest for a win will have to continue. Decatur got out to an early lead and never looked back, winning 8-2 over the Trojans.

Decatur at one point led 8-0, but Auburn was able to salvage two late goals to close the gap to six.

In the 53rd minute, Auburn had a sliver of space and freshman Naima Avendano sliced through the Gator backline and found the back of the net for the Trojans’ first goal of the game.

The second goal for Auburn came just 10 minutes later, and Mary Rush cashed in on a pass from Kate Loldile.

Auburn looks to get their first win of the season against Kentridge on Sept. 21 at Auburn High School.
