She was born in Lubao, Pampanga in the Philippines on December 24, 1927 to the late Catalina Calamarez and Apolonio Gutierrez. She married the late Gerardo Gapasin in 1953 in Manila and raised their two children by herself, upon the death of her husband in 1975.
