Marie (Olbrich) Henke

December 17, 1924 – September 6, 2016

Marie Elizabeth (Olbrich) Henke was born in Gresham and graduated from Holy Child Academy in Portland. While living in Gresham she regularly attended St. Henry’s Catholic Church.

Marie was one of eleven children of German immigrants Franz and Elizabeth Olbrich. Marie and her sisters Ruth and Cecilia bowled for years on a team at the old Fun Center in Gresham. She lived at the family home in Gresham for the first part of her life, where she and her siblings hosted family weddings, celebrations and weekend gatherings at the swimming pool in their backyard every summer.

Marie married Sylvester Henke on November 11, 1967 at St. Henry’s and they lived in Auburn, Washington. She was a dietitian at Auburn General Hospital. She and Si enjoyed traveling and their destinations included Australia and Vancouver, B.C. Si passed away in 1994.

Marie regularly attended mass at St. Vincent de Paul church in Federal Way. She was a faithful fan of the Seattle Mariners and Seahawks, watching all of their games on TV. She walked every day and didn’t miss a bingo game once she moved into assisted living.

In her last years Marie was taken care of by the staff of Village Green in Federal Way and her faithful caregiver Denise Geer of Home Instead Senior Care.

Marie was preceded in death by Si and four brothers and three sisters. She is survived by her brother Albert and sister Pauline Olbrich of Gresham and sister Cecilia Garbarino of Portland, sister-in- law Irene Retchless of Vancouver, her local Washington nieces and friends Terri Olbrich and Carol (Olbrich) Kohler and numerous nephews and nieces in the Gresham area and beyond.

A funeral mass will be held on Saturday, October 1st at 11 a.m. at St. Henry’s Catholic Church at 346 N.W. 1st Street, Gresham.
