The orchestra will perform charming “Salon” music as its take the audience on a whirlwind tour of Paris, Russia, and Buenos Aires. Come and hear delightful jazz by Claude Bolling, sultry tango by Astor Piazzolla and the pure romantic rapture of Sergei Rachmaninov.
ASO musicians Page Smith, cello; Matthew Goodrich, piano; Todd Larsen, bass; Gunnar Folsom, percussion; will take the audience on a wonderful musical ride.
Bolling, a renowned French jazz pianist, is highly respected in the jazz world. His popular classical crossover compositions such as “Suite for Cello and Jazz Piano Trio” have been widely acclaimed and embraced by artists like the brilliant Yo-Yo Ma.
Influenced by other Western music, composer Astor Piazzolla, revolutionized the tango world in his native Argentina and beyond with nuevo tango. “Libertango” and “Le Grand Tango” are two examples of that extraordinary sound and rhythm.
Rachmaninov composed in much the same strongly dramatic, romantic manner as his great Russian predecessor Tchaikovsky. His “Sonata in G Minor” for cello and piano is his most important chamber work. It is written on a grand scale, warmly romantic, with emotions ranging from lyrical and nostalgic to impassioned.
