In the $50,000 Cahill Road Stakes, also for 2-year-olds, Dallon’s Gold outran triple stakes winning filly Chu and You for the early lead and held off Moony Moony for a 3 1/2-length victory in 1 minute, 9.48 seconds for six furlongs.
The 1-to-5 betting favorite, Chu and You – with $25,718 of $27,566 wagered in the show pool – weakened and finished fourth, resulting in gigantic show prices on the top three finishers.
Ridden by Ronald Richard at 120 lbs, Dallon’s Gold paid $13.40, $6.80 and $21. Dave Bennett is the trainer for owners Dixie Hitchcock of Bonney Lake, Debra Larson of Phoenix and Delwyn Ellis of Blackfoot, Ida.
Dallon’s Gold, setting fractions of :21.65, :44.24 and :56.55, put away Chu and You on the turn, kicked three lengths clear into the lane, and held off Moony Moony and Stikine Slough for the victory.
“I had the outside post position, and I was planning to break it out of the gate and get on top of the favorite,” Richard said. “Nothing is ever for sure, but I definitely loved my chances from there. The only proven horse I was really scared of was Chu and You, and Dallon’s Gold is unproven having only won two races.
“Going up against a horse that has won three stakes races is a pretty big test.”
Moony Moony, a 14-to-1 longshot ridden by Isaias Enriquez at 120 lbs, paid $12 and $50. Stikine Slough, the 5-to-1 second choice ridden by Rocco Bowen at 120, finished third and paid $26.80.
A Washington-bred by Private Gold, Dallon’s Gold is undefeated in three starts – scoring gate-to-wire victories of 8 3/4, 4 3/4 and 3 1/2 lengths. Sunday’s winning share of the of $26,656 increased his earnings to $42,538.
