Auburn posts last-minute 31-30 victory over Sumner | Prep football

Auburn continued its winning ways on Thursday with a 31-30 last-second win over Sumner in a South Puget Sound League 3A game at Sunset Chev Stadium.

With no time left on the clock, kicker Caden Borden converted the extra point following junior Kevin Clay’s 7-yard touchdown run, giving Auburn (3-1 in league, 4-2 overall) its third straight victory.

Sumner falls to 1-3 in league, 3-3 overall.

Auburn jumped out to a 17-0 first-quarter lead.

Senior Nick Kaatz connected with junior Malik Williams for a 38-yard touchdown pass. On the Spartans’ subsequent possession, Auburn’s Jack Tuia scooped up a fumble, returning it 12 yards for a TD.

Borden converted a 29-yard field goal to put the Trojans up 17-0.

After Sumner closed to within 17-13, Auburn’s Justin Ioimo scored on a 5-yard TD run with 41 seconds left in the second quarter to give the Trojans a 24-13 halftime lead.

The Spartans posted 17 points, including Josh Riley’s 14-yard run, that put the Spartans up 30-24 with just 50 seconds left on the clock.

But Auburn responded with a game-winning drive.

The Trojans travel to Bonney Lake at 7 p.m. next Friday to take on the Panthers (0-3, 1-4).
