Fire blotter: Rescue workers revive man’s pulse

Between March 2 and March 8, the Valley Regional Fire Authority responded to the following calls for service, among many others.

March 2

Non-aid service call: 11:45 a.m. (Auburn). Firefighters inspected a lithium battery that started off-gassing and making unusual noises after a teenager disassembled an appliance. They checked for heat and hazardous air readings, and finding none, moved the battery outside and away from nearby exposures.

March 3

Mass casualty: 8:27 a.m. (Algona). Firefighters and King County Medic One paramedics responded to reports of an active shooter, and arrived to find one teen and two adults with gunshot wounds at two separate locations. Firefighters and paramedics treated the injured parties on scene, before paramedics transported them to Harborview Medical Center. One person was pronounced dead at the scene.

March 4

Aid call: 7:22 p.m. (Auburn). Firefighters and King County Medic One paramedics evaluated a woman with contractions in her 38th week of pregnancy, and then paramedics transported her to MultiCare Auburn Medical Center for further care.

March 5

CPR: (Auburn). While firefighters were en route to help a man who was struggling to catch his breath, the man stopped breathing and his heart stopped. Firefighters began CPR, and King County Medic One paramedics established an advanced airway due to difficulties. The man regained a pulse on scene, and then paramedics transported him to Valley Medical Center in Renton, with two firefighters assisting during transport.

March 6

Aid call: 2:16 p.m. (Auburn). Firefighters evaluated a woman with a contact lens stuck behind her eyelid, and a private ambulance transported her to MultiCare Auburn Medical Center for further care.

March 7

Service call: 10:02 a.m. (Auburn). Hurrying to help a man at a self-storage facility who was stuck in an elevator, firefighters were able to open the elevator door and safely help the man out.

March 8

Aid call: 1:36 p.m. (Auburn). Firefighters responding to a child with an arm injury at a local recreational business arrived to find an obvious deformity to the child’s forearm and splinted the injury on scene. The child’s mother then transported him to Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital for further care.
