Valley Regional Fire Authority firefighters extinguished a chimney fire that led to the partial collapse of a roof to an Algona residence late Wednesday night.

The VRFA, responding at 10:45 p.m. to a report of a chimney fire in the 100 block of Fifth Avenue North, saw smoke and flames from the attic when firefighters arrived. The roof partially collapsed before firefighters were able to fully extinguish the fire.

Two male residents evacuated before fire crews arrived and received help from the American Red Cross. There were no reported injuries.

The VRFA fire investigator determined that the fire was accidental caused by a chimney fire that extended into the attic space. Damages are estimated at $75,000.

To reduce your risk of a chimney fire, have your chimney cleaned and inspected annually by a licensed chimney cleaning company.
