WSDOT wants public input for SR 164 improvements

Do you drive SR 164 between Enumclaw and Auburn? Then the Washington State Department of Transportation wants to hear from you.

This stretch of highway is currently undergoing a new planning study to help determine what short- and long-term needs should be made in the area.

Gathering public input is only one of the first steps in this process, which will culminate in a report sent to the state legislature by summer of next year.

This current study is building on a previous one from 2009, which recommended numerous intersection improvements.

This is a planning study only, and any proposed projects will still need to go through normal funding, design, and environmental review processes.

SR 164 is marked as a “high injury” corridor by the Puget Sound Regional Council high-injury network.

According to the map, a one-mile stretch between 216th Avenue SE and 196th Ave SE is “high risk,” as seven serious injuries or fatalities have been recorded on this part of the highway.

Another stretch, from about SE 424th Street to Southeast 408th Street, has experience five serious injuries or fatal incidents.

And the final stretch of road from 156th Ave. SE to Auburn, close to five-and-a-half miles, has a recorded 52 serious injuries or fatal incidents.
