She understands business, having worked as a buyer of radar equipment for AWACS airplanes at Boeing for 10 years. She raised a son as a single mother. She knows Auburn, a community she has called home for 30 years.

So when Joanne Macnab discovered an opening to manage the Auburn International Farmers Market, she jumped at the chance. She is familiar with the weekly operation, having worked closely with vendors as a logistics coordinator during the market’s inaugural season a year ago.

Macnab succeeds Lillie Brinker, who recently was dismissed by City officials.

She welcomes the task of extending the market’s reach.

“We’re still learning, and we’re still trying to grow,” said Macnab, who also worked in sales and management for Nordstorm after returning to the work force when her son was grown. “We’re always looking for vendors and, of course, dedicated volunteers who would give a few hours a week or a month to their community.

“We have a good group of volunteers,” she added. “This market would not exist without our volunteers. It is the best group of people I ever had the pleasure of working with. They show up every Sunday from setup to takedown. They always have a smile on their face. They’re always enjoying themselves.”

Forty-seven vendors greeted Macnab on opening day last month.

The market is open 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. each Sunday. It runs through Sept. 26 at the Auburn Sound Transit Plaza, 23 A St. S.W.

The weekly market will include free performances, guest chefs with farm fresh ingredients and childrens’ activities from face painting to hands-on activities to storytelling. The market will also offer classes on health, nutrition and gardening.
