The Auburn Area Chamber of Commerce reports that several Auburn businesses and residents, including the Chamber offices, have been contacted by phone callers saying that they are from “Card Services” and want to update their information on victims’ credit card/bank accounts.
The phone number comes up as “Unavailable” on the caller ID. This appears to be a “boiler room” operation, an attempt to gain access to credit card information in order to make unauthorized purchases.
Auburn officials are warning the public to not give out any information to these people. They are asked to immediately call their bank or credit card company with the number they provide on statements for verification. Legitimate banks and credit card companies do not randomly call to update or verify account information, nor should any personal information be given to anyone over the phone. Sensitive information that may be asked for is account numbers, Social Security numbers, passwords and birth dates.
Please report suspect phone calls to the State Attorney General at 360-753-6200, or contact the Auburn Area Chamber of Commerce at 253-833-0700.
