Fair ball? Let’s even the playing field

It could have started as early as conception or as late as birth, but those crazy “X” and “Y” chromosomes can seal one’s fate. I’m talking about fairness between boys and girls.

I have a daughter who plays Little League fastpitch softball. These girls practice, play, sweat and bleed just as hard as the boys. Why then are they denied the same practice and game fields as the boys? Nor do they have an umpire show up on a consistent basis.

Each girl/family is required to pay $150 to sign up to play the whole year. My daughters team has 14 players, that’s a total of $2,100 paid. They play 15 scheduled games, that’s if none are rained out and not rescheduled. That makes it a $140 per game average per team, two teams to play a game and we still can’t get a nice field and an umpire for $280.

Did we forget that this is all about the kids? This is not a good lesson being taught.

We all enjoy watching the game being played, whether its boys or girls throwing strikes, hitting the fastball or just playing bulldozer in the dirt with their glove.

Don’t blame the chromosomes, fair is fair.
