Sanctuary city status creates uncertainty

I urge the City of Auburn to not even take a vote on sanctuary status.

I spent 28 years as a police officer at an international airport, and immigration status could not have been any further of a concern to me during that time. We were plenty busy without getting involved with immigration.

However, when an arrest was made and the subject was being identified, if they came back not to be legal in the United States, we were required by law to pass that information on to federal authorities.

By Auburn becoming a sanctuary city, you are stepping into unknown territory and may be placing federal funding in jeopardy. How important is federal funding? A major portion of our City Hall was built on federal funds. Do you really want to jeopardize that kind of funding?

We need to secure our borders and make U.S. citizens feel safe. The bottom line continues to be that if you are here illegally, you need to go back home and work to become a legal citizen.

At the last meeting, one of the council members appears to have no problem making this a political issue in order to further their own political career. This should not be a political decision. This should be a logical decision.

The City must not break federal laws for any reason.
