Taxes from pot sales may ease burden

Regarding how The Stashbox (“Auburn pot shop smokin’”, Auburn Reporter, Jan. 20) has made so much money that it has a need to expand its facility brings to question the taxes this city is taking in for just one week of pot sales, $14,276.

Since this shop is preparing to expand due to significant sales, then it seems reasonable to anticipate more sales and taxes this city will receive.

I have seen that this city is considering adding $20 to our vehicle registration tags. Then there’s the property taxes that will increase because of the passage of a school bond last November.

It won’t be long before the King County Transit bonds will also start taxing us and adding to our yearly property taxes. Much of that blank check will cost millions that many in the south end of Auburn will never experience because the transit system will expand north of Seattle, and it’s not due to provide any services for years to come.

Now, about the pot shop’s taxes to Auburn. There’s more than one pot shop in town, and I’m sure the other shop also pays taxes to this city.

So why does this city have to add $20 to our license tags when it could use pot shop taxes to pay for the needs of the city and leave our license tags alone? We are about to be smothered by school bond and transit taxes and now a financial choke hold on our vehicle tags too?
