The Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra will take the stage at the Auburn Performing Arts Center for a single 2:30 p.m. performance Oct 20.
The orchestra features Nancy Knorr in her own rendition of Helen O’Connell classics. The band leader is Bill Tole, who possesses a rich, extensive musical background.
The orchestra will play favorites like “Amapola,” “Green Eyes,” “Tangerine,” “I Remember You,” “Kalamazoo,” “Manhattan Serenade,” and “Take Me.”
Jimmy Dorsey’s musical training began when he was a boy and along with his brother, Tommy, the talented musicians joined Paul Whiteman’s Orchestra. At the same time, they were recording records under the billing of The Dorsey Brothers.
The powerful partnership ended after Tommy stormed off stage over a dispute on the tempo of a song during a performance in 1935. Jimmy Dorsey took the reins of the ensemble himself, and The Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra was formed from the remaining musicians.
Jimmy Dorsey found skilled talent to fill in the gaps. O’Connell was added in 1939 to pair with Bob Eberly.
The Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra became synonymous with the unusual 3-section “a-b-c” format of song composition, allowing the spotlight to fall on first Eberly, then the full band backing Jimmy’s saxophone play, and finally O’Connell rounding out the track.
