Darryl Lenox, an American comedian who has made appearances on Conan O’Brien, Comedy Central and other shows, headlines January Comedy at the Ave.

The three-comedian show begins at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 15 at the historic theater, 10 Auburn Ave.

Lenox also has appeared on WTF with Marc Maron, Starz (TV channel), BET, and A&E (TV channel). He is popular in Canada, having lived there for 12 years. His standup special, “Blind Ambition”, was filmed at The Vogue Theatre in Vancouver, B.C., and picked up by the Starz network. Lenox is signed to Standup! Records.

Lenox has an interesting story that makes his comedy real and refreshing. Living in Las Vegas, Seattle, Canada and now in New York City, Lenox has been surrounded by comedic influences. However, his most powerful influence comes from within. It is his visual impairment that has pushed him to become the comedian he is today.

The content (Blind Ambition) goes deep, drawing on a risky eye surgery that ultimately led him to the role of executive producer of the standup special.

“The risk we had to take to do my major eye surgery – the one that could have left me totally blind – it propelled me to take the risk on Blind Ambition,” Lenox explained. “The doctor who performed the surgery is my hero – it was incredibly inspiring. I knew after that experience that my days of waiting on people were over.”

In 2007 the City of Auburn began the Comedy at the Ave Performance Series, expanding the entertainment offerings that have gone back more than 30 years.
