Mapping Our Voices for Equality (MOVE), a new online map and digital storytelling website, launches today. MOVE features on-going changes that improve healthy eating and physical activity and create tobacco-free environments in King County.
The website showcases over seventy-five multi-lingual digital stories produced by community members and a local map that illustrates policies changes that are improving health.
“MOVE provides a forum for voices from the community as well as a visually interesting way to capture the exciting changes that are happening in King County,” said Dr. David Fleming, Director and Health Officer for Public Health – Seattle & King County.
The MOVE website includes:
• First person narratives about the personal impact of health inequities, such as lack of access to healthy food
• A mapping interface for exploring which housing developments and campuses have become “smoke free” in 2011
• An extensive “take action” section with information on how to effect change
“Through the MOVE website, community members have become more involved in creating positive changes for their communities while learning new technologies,” said Natasha Freidus, Project Manager for MOVE.
MOVE is part of on-going disease prevention efforts in King County through Communities Putting Prevention to Work (CPPW), a federally-funded grant to fight obesity and tobacco use.
This fall, MOVE will host a series of three community forums with local decision-makers. King County residents will present the MOVE map, digital stories and policy priorities to panels of elected officials. All King County residents are welcome to attend.
MOVE events
The first event is Friday, Oct. 28 at the Wing Luke Museum of the Asian Pacific American Experience. The event, titled “International District (ID) on the MOVE,” includes neighborhood tours and free entry to the new “From Fields to Family” exhibit at 3 p.m. and a presentation and community forum beginning at 4 p.m.

“Latinos LGBTQ en Movimiento,” presented by Entre Hermanos on Thursday, Nov. 3, 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Miller Community Center
“Latinos on the MOVE,” presented by Sea Mar on Wednesday, December 7th 6:30-8:00 PM at Burien Library at Burien City Hall
The map and digital stories are a collaboration of MOVE partners: Sea Mar, Creative Narrations, Entre Hermanos, International Community Health Services, Puget SoundOff, Public Health – Seattle & King County and the REACH Coalition.
