3 Auburn schools earn big in Safeway program

Hazelwood, Lake View and Meredith Hill elementary schools were among the top 200 earning groups nationally in the recent Safeway “10% Back to Schools” program.

As one of the top 200 groups, Safeway contributed an additional $1,000 to each school for their efforts in this promotion.

The three school earned more than $28,700 during the five-week promotion.

In 2008, through the program alone, Safeway stores donated more than $2.5 million to non-profit groups across the nation.

Hazelwood Elementary Principal Sally Colburn said the $16,743.00 the school earned will be used to purchase a poster-making machine and the remaining funds will be put into the playground fund.

“We are actively saving for the necessary funds to replace or update our current playground equipment,” Colburn said. “We especially appreciate the extra efforts of Samantha Utley, one of our parents, who personally helped to coordinate this effort.”

“We appreciate all that Safeway does and for their ongoing commitment to education and our local schools.” said Linda Wilson-Hill, Hazelwood PTA co-president. “Because of Safeway participation in the eScrip program and our commitment to sign-up all of our school families with eScrip, we are able to further add to our children’s school experience in ways that current funding does not allow.”

The Safeway 10% Back to Schools program allowed schools to earn 10% of items purchased by school supporters from participating manufacturers this past summer. Top Safeway manufacturers contributing to the program included Kraft Foods, Clorox, Kellogg’s, General Mills, Sara Lee and Unilever.

In addition to the 10% Back to Schools Program, the eScrip program delivers marketing programs that bring retailers, manufacturers and service providers forward in support of education of youth. To date, the eScrip program has generated more than $200 million in merchant contributions to schools and organizations across the country.
