Area youth symphony looks to fill void

The Maple Valley Youth Symphony Orchestra is adding a new program to its already bustling lineup.

The Maple Valley Youth Symphony Orchestra is adding a new program to its already bustling lineup.

This season, the MVYSO will include a group called “Debut Orchestra.” The program was created to help the student with one-to-three years of playing experience develop confidence and skill in playing and performing in a group setting. With many school districts cutting elementary band and orchestra programs, the MVYSO hopes to provide a much needed program for students.

The MVYSO also will conduct its second season of its Beginning Strings program.

“The local school district in Maple Valley (Tahoma) does not have a string program at this time. We are hoping to inspire kids who want to play stringed instruments,” said Elisa Lewis, MVYSO executive director. “By starting kids young, we hope to help them develop music, discipline and social habits that last a lifetime.”

It has been proven in many studies that students who are involved in youth music do better both socially and academically.

The MVYSO has an orchestra program for students of every playing level. The regular season begins Monday, Sept. 13 for intermediate and advanced students, Sept. 27 for Beginning Strings, and Sept. 29 for the Debut Orchestra.
