Auburn Symphony Orchestra concludes its chamber series with The Circus Ballet and a Little Jazz at 4 p.m. March 9 at St. Matthew Episcopal Church, 123 L St. NE, Auburn.

The orchestra performs Prokofiev’s Quintet based on his score for Trapeze, which was written for a traveling ballet troupe. Because the ensemble that accompanied the ballet had only five musicians, the resulting music became part of the chamber repertoire.

Frank Proto wrote his jazzy trio for violin, viola and double bass in 1974 when he was with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. Originally a bass player with Broadway show bands and in New York jazz clubs, Proto played, composed and arranged for the Cincinnati Symphony for thirty years.

Founded in 1996, the fully professional orchestra is led by Stewart Kershaw, internationally renowned conductor and former music director of the Pacific Northwest Ballet Orchestra.
