Also, an Aquafina Pitch, Hit and Run competition is being held for ages 7-14 with the help of the Green River Community College Athletic Department. Free to the public. Special Needs Youth Fishing Derby: 9 a.m.-1 p.m., April 24, Auburn Mill Pond Park, 600 Oravetz Road. Lions of Zone C-3 invite preschool and school-age special needs youth to free derby. Bring a fishing rod and bait. Siblings and friends welcome. State officials will stock the pond. Lions Club members will clean and package fish for participants. Clean Sweep: 7:30 a.m., May 8, City Hall, 25 W. Main St. The community-wide volunteer effort focuses on major cleanup and beautification efforts in downtown Auburn and in other areas around the city. Driver’s Edge: 8 a.m., 1 p.m. sessions, May 15-16, Emerald Downs, parking area. Free training for young drivers in an effort to combat the unacceptably high number of teen-related auto collisions and driving fatalities. Taught by driving professionals, the program combines behind the wheel and classroom experiences designed to alter young driver attitudes and behavior. Exercises include expert instruction on skid control, evasive lane changing, panic braking and combating unexpected situations. A total of 400 young drivers (plus their parents) will have the opportunity to attend. Spaces are available for young drivers age 21or younger with a valid driver’s license or permit. Continuing Education Department is offering a spring quarter class on how to process biodiesel at home. A two-week classroom and hands-on learning course will be taught by James Burke. Course will include how to assemble, troubleshoot and maintain a biodiesel manufacturing unit, how to manufacture biodiesel from waste vegetable oil and explore how WVO biodiesel manufacturing can create self-sustaining communities worldwide.
