The artwork of Meghan Urback and Patti Bowman will be on view at the City Hall Gallery through April 30.

Both artists will be part of a free opening reception and artist tour on Thursday, April 1, 5:30-7 p.m. at Auburn City Hall, 25 W. Main St.

Urback is a California-based fiber artist who employs quilting and stitching to create abstract topographies on fabric. She works with thread and paper and a muted color palette to focus the eye upon complex texture and repeated motifs. Her labor-intensive technique is a contemporary translation of traditional textile arts.

Bowman, meanwhile, uses a variety of mediums in her artwork (encaustic wax, oil, acrylic, relief prints, automotive primer, a screwdriver, a plumbing torch, razor blades, old drawings, bits of paper, and used guitar strings), sometimes alone and sometimes all at once. Her imagery and materials are suspended in layers of encaustic wax, likened to a frozen lake where the viewer can look a the surface and see traces of everything that is under the surface.

Bowman also will be offering an encaustic class on Saturday, April 24, 1-5 p.m. Preregistration required. Interested participants can register by calling 253-931-3043.

The Auburn City Hall Gallery is presented by the City of Auburn and Auburn Parks, Arts & Recreation. For a 2010 gallery brochure or for information on other cultural arts programs, go to www.auburnwa.gov/arts or call 253-931-3043.
