Auburn High School students will be participating in DECA’s International Career Development Conference in Atlanta this week.

The following students worked on successful projects and will be competing at the conference:

• Wendy Menchu-Lopez, Alexis Embody and McKenna Wall: Competing in community service (30 page-plus presentation)

The topic is the Muscular Dystrophy Association highlighting fundraising, awareness activities and students as MDA Summer Camp counselors.

• Jordin McCoy and Antonio Lopez: School-based enterprise

DECA Fresh the Student Store. The students worked to start the transition to the new “Smart Snacks In Schools” regulations that take effect in August. The legislation limits calories, sugar, fats and sodium in foods sold during the school day.

• Ashley Brown and Yacceni Castelan Flores: Entrepreneurship learn and earn

The project created a business plan and outcomes for the AHS Trojan Attire apparel company.

• Kassy Strickland and Brier Atkinson: Public relations project

The topic is Trojans Taking Charge and includes a school-wide campaign about the importance of exercise and good nutrition. Through fundraising and awareness, students have been able to fund an after school program of cross training and other activities that provide students with a place and direction to get healthy.

• Carly Patterson and Nyalong Chuol: Chapter campaigns.

Students had to document and fulfill requirements for DECA month and for Community Service.

Elsewhere

Two Auburn Riverside High School students were gold medal winners at the April SkillsUSA state conference and will compete in the National Leadership and Skills Conference in June in Kansas City, Mo.

Senior Brandon Hall earned a gold medal in computer maintenance and is a two-time Washington state champion. He placed fifth at the national competition in 2013. Sophomore Addison Farley earned a gold medal in electronics technology.

Their accomplishments qualify them to compete against state winners from throughout the country. More than 6,000 students from across the United States will compete hands-on in 99 different trade, technical and leadership fields during the week-long conference.
