Auburn Mountainview at a glance | Prep volleyball preview

A look at Auburn Mountainview, its top players and outlook for the upcoming volleyball season.

AUBURN MOUNTAINVIEW LIONS

• Coach: Telia Peterson, first year

• Last year: first in SPSL 3A with 9-1 league record, 17-6 overall. Qualified for the state 3A tournament, where the Lions went 1-2.

• Top returners: Kaylie Paul, senior, libero, 5-9; Ali Davenport, junior, middle hitter, 5-11; Kiley Lewis, sophomore, outside hitter, 6-2.

• Impact newcomers: Casey Davenport, sophomore, setter, 5-6.

• Outlook: Peterson has big shoes to fill replacing Nicole Claudon, who last year helped lead the team to its ninth straight state tourney appearance and was named SPSL 3A Coach of the Year. For the past five years, Peterson has coached in Houston at the club, middle school, and collegiate levels. She brings college playing experience from her days at Boise State University.

Peterson looks to replace All-SPSL 3A MVP Molly Cichosz (now at Loyola University) and all-league first-teamers Maya Williamson (Lewis and Clark State College) and Savanna Cappa (Tacoma Community College). Luckily for Peterson, the cupboard at Auburn Mountainview is far from bare.

Returning are defensive specialist Paul, a first-team all-league selection last year, and Lewis, who was an honorable mention.

• Key match: The Lions get an early test Sept. 22 at Auburn Riverside.
