Auburn Mountainview girls basketball stays alive in district tourney with 51-44 win over Peninsula

Facing elimination in the first round of the West Central-Southwest Bi-district tournament, the Auburn Mountainview girls basketball team managed to stay alive with a 51-44 victory over Peninsula on Wednesday night at Auburn High School.

Tied 18-18 at the intermission, the Lions (14-6) posted 33 second half points to stay alive in the consolation bracket of the tourney.

Auburn Mountainview was led by freshman guard Aalia Braboy’s 15 points, with Angel Pele adding 10 and Stephanie Smolinski chipping in with nine. Ida Huners had eight points and Brianne Wills contributed seven. Caitlin Carr had two points.

The Seahawks (11-9) was led by senior Taylor Helwig who had 16 points.

The Lions will play Port Angeles at 8 p.m. Friday at Auburn Riverside High School in a loser out contest. The winner of the game will move on to the third round of the district tourney and play against the winner of the Mount Rainier versus Enumclaw game at 8 p.m. March 6 at Clover Park High School.
