Auburn Mountainview High School hosts a Nick of Time Foundation (NoTFY) Youth Heart Screen on April 6, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Heart screens are available on a first-come, first-serve basis for any youth, athlete or not, ages 14-24 years, regardless of where they are enrolled in school.
Joey Santos, the school’s senior class president, is leading the effort with the support of his mother, Abby.
The NoTF program works together to help protect youth and communities by providing early detection, access to defibrillation, CPR/AED education and awareness as it trains the next generation of first-responders.
Cardiac arrest is the leading cause of sudden death in young people and is typically the result of undiagnosed structural or electrical heart disease.
Screenings consist of a heart health survey investigating signs and symptoms/family history of a cardiac conditionx, a blood pressure and physical exam and ECG (electrocardiogram). An on-site echocardiogram is conducted in cases with a positive finding on history or physical exam. Follow up support is available if needed. CPR-AED training is also available.
The goals of the NoTF heart screening program are:
• To detect hidden heart conditions with the potential for sudden death in the young.
• To reduce sudden cardiac death through early detection and appropriate medical interventions, activity modification.
• To raise awareness and educate schools and communities about sudden cardiac arrest, warning symptoms and the value of heart screening.
All students must pre-register for screenings.
