Auburn Optimists award scholarships to local students

The Auburn Optimist Dollars for Scholars Foundation recently announced its Scholarship recipients. Pamela Schmidt, club president, and Jim Fletcher, foundation president, presented the awards.

The following students were named recipients:

Katherine Garbe, 17, Auburn High School: Garbe, a 3.94 student, plans to study political science or international relations at the University of Washington. While at college, she plans to take French and possibly intern in Washington, D.C. She would like to work for the State Department in the Foreign Service.

Her high school activities and interests include the Auburn Youth Council, Miss Auburn Scholarship Pageant, Evergreen Girls State, tennis, volleyball, Camp Auburn counselor, co-director of the Mr. AHS fundraiser, Troy crew treasurer and AP and honors classes.

Dawn Thomas, 18, Auburn Riverside: Thomas, a 3.5 student, plans to attend Washington State University to major in zoology. She wants to learn how to tend and care for all kinds of tame and wild animals.

Thomas, who lost her parents at an early age, has been living with her maternal aunt.

Among her interests and activities are the piano, choir, volunteering in the community, participating in school clubs in leadership, foreign languages and officer positions. She completed AP courses in sports medicine and computer use. She also was active in tennis and basketball.

Sean Isom, 18, Auburn Riverside: Isom plans to attend Western Washington University to major in either computer science or computer engineering. He was a regional winner of the Community Volunteer Service Award in the Northwest Dollars for Scholars program, earning $500. He spent many volunteer hours with the Auburn-Kent Sister Cities program.

Sara Davis, 20, West Auburn: Davis plans to become a restauranteur by studying culinary arts in chef/food preparation management at the Art Institute of Portland. At nine years old, Davis began to cook under her mother’s supervision.

Davis comes from a family with different nationalities.

She has overcome health issues and setbacks in her life. Her interests and activities include softball, reading, poetry, baseball, yearbook, newspaper and club officer.

Alvaro Diaz Martin, 18, Auburn Mountainview: A 3.94 student, Martin plans to become a mechanical engineer, beginning his studies at Highline Community College. He has completed honors and AP classes in calculus and English.

Martin is one of six children in his family. His interest and activities include reading, puzzle building, cooking, track and field and clubs. He has volunteered as a student aide at an elementary school, distributed Christmas toys with the Auburn Fire Department and helped at the Auburn Food Bank with Thanksgiving and Christmas food baskets.
