Seventeen recalled stadium light poles installed at the Auburn Mountainview High School football and baseball fields pose no danger of falling, according to Randall Thomas, director of maintenance for the Auburn School District.
According to the recall issued Tuesday by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the poles – manufactured by the now-defunct Whitco Company LP in Fort Worth, Texas – were in danger of fracturing, cracking and toppling.
As of June 2010, the CPSC had confirmed 11 incidents in which Whitco Company LP poles, standing more than 70 feet tall and weighing from 1-7 tons, had fallen over, with no injuries reported.
The recall covers more than 2,500 poles at locations nationwide.
According to Thomas, the district received word from their insurance carrier a little more than a year ago and immediately ordered an inspection of the poles.
“We did a little additional investigation, researched it and talked to the installer,” Thomas said.
The district obtained the services of Tacoma-based Mayes Testing Engineers, who came out in October of 2009 and visually inspected and tested the integrity of the poles, Thomas said.
“They found that all the welds were sound and there were no signs of flaws or cracks,” Thomas said.
Thomas added the poles are inspected annually by a district safety officer, and there were no plans to replace them.
The recall also covered light poles installed locally at Denny Middle School, Rainier Beach High School and the North Creek Athletic Fields in Bothell.
